The Princess Shop's Mentorship Program Hosts Clarity Coaching

posted by The Princess Shop    |   February 28, 2016 11:15

The Princess Shop is most well known as a Saskatoon non-profit that runs an incredible grad dress program. What many don't know is that we also have a mentorship program called The Fairy Godmother Program. The purpose of the Fairy Godmother Program is to provide Princess Graduates who have participated in The Princess Shop's Dress Program with the opportunity to build a positive relationship with another woman in our community. These women, known as Fairy Godmothers, are volunteers who are established and stable in their own lives and wish to make a difference in the lives of young women. Each month during the school year the fairy godmothers and their princess graduates participate in a group activity. This month we welcomed Jolene Watson of Clarity Coaching to present to our wonderful matches!!

Jolene led the group through a one hour condensed version of the Myers Briggs personality assessment. It was an evening of self-discovery, instilling confidence in our young women to take the first steps into the dreams and goals they have personally set.

Each session went through a series of explanations and examples of the 8 different core facets of personality, encouraging better self-awareness in many areas of life. There was even some laughter amongst the matches as they discovered which of the 16 personality types they best identified with.

Jolene also provided the group with great stress relieving tactics to help diminish the daily worries we face. She left the group with a practical challenge. After each person discovered their personality type and learned about how their type interacts with others, they committed to one daily change in their behavior with a goal of fostering more positive relationships.

With only one activity remaining in the program, we are sad to see the year come to an end. However, we are excited for relationships to continue and to see everyone again in the summer as we start a new cycle and welcome new participants to the program.

Applications for new entrants to the Fairy Godmother Program will open in April. We look forward to meeting you!

Much Love,

Your Fairy Godmother Program Coordinator

-Kayla

Best Cupcake in Saskatoon goes to...

posted by The Princess Shop    |   January 28, 2016 09:43

When we were first contacted about being a part of Wintershines in 2016 we were as excited as we were overwhelmed with ideas. As a Saskatoon non-profit, we take any opportunities we can to be involved in the community. We knew that being part of Potashcorp's Wintershines was the perfect opportunity to spread information about our program, while giving the community a place to gather, and to share some sweet treats on a cold winter day.

After learning that there weren't any other cupcake competitions locally, we knew that we had a great opportunity to bring the community together to name BEST CUPCAKE in SASKATOON! We got to work reaching out to local cake masters and bakeries, and were so grateful for the reception we had! Our event was as huge success, and we owe that to each of our local contestants. Without further ado, a huge thank you to The Park Town Hotel, Cakes by Britney, Griffin Takeaway, Baby K Cupcakes and Cakes, The Cupcake Conspiracy, and our very own Princess Shop entry.

Each of our bakers and bakeries chose a gown from the Princess Shop to model their cupcake design after. The results were OUTSTANDING!

The Park Town Hotel's delicious vanilla cupcakes were served upside down, a design inspired by their gorgeous mermaid style grad dress. It was topped with orange creamsicle icing, and handmade black licorice pearls that perfectly emulated the taste of tiger tiger icecream.

Griffin Takeaway had the most articulate icing design. They designed a chocolatey rose on top of each cupcake that went perfectly with their stunning dark red and rose coloured gown.

Baby K Cupcakes and Cakes created a perfect swirl of vanilla and strawberry. From the most moist cupcake to the swirled icing, strawberry shortcake herself would be jealous of this one!

The Cupcake Conspiracy absolutely nailed their take on a classic chocolate cupcake, and upped the anti from there with the most outstanding colour combination of the evening. Buttercream in flavour, but multicoloured rainbows and sparkles in appearance. It was as tantilizing to the eyes as it was to the tastebuds.

Our very own Princess Shop baker who also doubles as our Live Auction Coordinator, Miss Whitney, lead our team in the design of a beautiful and tasty raspberry rose cupcake.

And last but certainly not least, our 'Dress It Up Cupcake Contest' WINNER is the lovely Cakes by Britney! Britney put a new spin on an old favourite. This delicious carrot cake was also infused with coconut and pineapple, topped with signature ice blue buttercream frosting and crowned with silver sparkles and jewels. It was as tasty as it was beautiful! CONGRATULATIONS BRITNEY AND TEAM!

Other thank yous to the businesses who donated door prizes: The Industrial Kitchen & BarKR Jewelry, Joy Tesch Stylist at Visions Salon & Spa !

A special thank you to Kevin Stanfield of Global Saskatoon for emceeing the event and announcing our winner!

To Mandy Pravda , Kim Ali, and Jeff Culbert for putting on such a fantastic winter festival and bringing the community together! Thank you to PotashCorp for funding an important community event: Wintershines!

To each of our The Princess Shop volunteers who helped bake, organize, setup and takedown the event.

And lastly, but surely not least, to each of YOU in the community who came to sample, vote, and enjoy an evening of sweets for such a great cause. You are helping us bring graduation, scholarship, and mentorship experiences to more Saskatchewan women than ever before. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! All of !the proceeds from the event were given back to the Princess Shop!

Our next major event is our 9th Annual Glass Slipper Benefit on April 7, 2016. Join us for an evening of good fun, good food, and giving back to the community. We'd love to see you there!

All love,

The Princess Shop Team

Volunteering at The Princess Shop

Volunteering at The Princess Shop- From the Perspective of The Princess Shop's Fundraising Coordinator

I joined The Princess Shop in August of 2012 as a Volunteer Representative. I had started to feel restless in my office job and thought that finding something to feed my soul would help. When I began to think of my passions and what would work best for me, I thought of The Princess Shop and to my pleasant surprise, they were engaging new volunteers! I immediately did everything I could to draw attention to myself, which included calling, emailing and dropping by the shop. It might have been overkill, but I got the role as Volunteer Representative and I was thrilled.

When I started volunteering, I was stressed out however, The Princess Shop became my retreat. I was able to escape all of this weight and be my normal carefree self with smart, funny, amazing women all while doing something to impact my community and this wonderful city. On more than one occasion, I would leave work on Thursday and almost be in tears, wondering if I could be able to make it to a meeting at The Princess Shop without bursting out crying but would find myself smiling and laughing as soon as I walked in the door. When I was in that room filled with so many beautiful dresses and insanely amazing women, I felt strong and valuable and my fellow volunteers really listened when I spoke. It was wonderful to feel like such an indispensable member of a team.

I offered to take on the role of Fundraising Coordinator around the time of my first Glass Slipper. My first fundraiser was with Pure Frozen Yogurt, and it was wonderful. The staff at Pure were so great to work with! They made special treats, put the colour pink everywhere and even dressed up! It was the perfect fundraiser to start off my new role Some other highlights include the Trivia Night at Amigo's put together by friends Andy and Mark, the Christmas fundraiser put on by Mane Productions and Fresh Living, and the Bachelor Canada event put together by one of The Princess Shop's creators, Chantal Hounjet! Every time this community offers The Princess Shop their time and money, I'm so incredibly humbled.

Early in 2014, I gave birth to my daughter, Evey. Everyone at the shop was so accommodating to my new and often unknown schedule and have been extremely welcome to our new The Princess Shop member! Now with Evey nearing her first birthday, I'm only getting busier and am having trouble finding the time to fit in the hours that The Princess Shop and our Princess Graduates truly deserve. I knew I was not ready to say goodbye to The Princess Shop yet, but I knew I couldn't keep trying to make my Fundraiser Coordinator role work. So after just a few months in this role, I'll be returning to Volunteer Representative.

I'm excited to pass the torch! In my opinion, fundraising is one of the most enjoyable jobs at The Princess Shop and I'm eager to see who will take it on.

xoxo
Whitney
