The REDress Project

posted by The Princess Shop    |   September 16, 2014 14:17

A unique and impactful art installation will be unveiled at the University of Saskatchewan this week. The REDress Project is a critical response to the number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women across Canada. The project collects red dresses, donated by members of the community, and displays these dresses as a visual reminder of the absence of missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

The REDress Project will official open Wednesday, September 17 with an opening reception starting at 4PM. Artist Jaime Black will lead an exhibition tour at 7:30PM. The exhibition will be installed at the University of Saskatchewan campus around the Bowl and the Agricultural, Arts. Education, and Geology buildings.

Projects, such as The REDress Project, remind our community about those women who can fall between the cracks and be forgotten. This visual reminder of the absence of women - friends, sisters, mothers - helps to create awareness of this national issue and urges the public to remember these women.

The Princess Shop believes that the young women in our community need to be supported and have their accomplishments recognized and celebrated in order to increase their self-esteem and drive. Our organization was proud to donate a few red dresses to be used in this project installation.

For more information visit The REDress Project website or the University of Saskatchewan's exhibit event Facebook page.

Join our team!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   August 1, 2014 16:06

The Princess Shop has an amazing set of women that volunteer to ensure that our organization can offer its services and programs. The Princess Shop is currently engaging new volunteers in the following positions:

Volunteer Representative
Fairy Godmother Program Coordinators (2)

Volunteer Representatives commit 6 hours a week to The Princess Shop (including weekly team meetings) and assist our Executive Director and program coordinators in many ways! From helping out with dress appointments, to attending and promoting fundraisers, and the planning and execution of our major fundraising event, The Glass Slipper Benefit for Princesses. Volunteer Representatives make it all happen and help The Princess Shop to offer our many programs and services to young women in our community.

Fairy Godmother Program Coordinators organize our mentorship program, The Fairy Godmother Program. The coordinator role is a 10 hour commitment (including weekly team meetings) and works in a team to recruit participants, match our Princess Graduates with great mentors from the community, and plan monthly activities for the program. The Fairy Godmother Program is an extremely worthwhile and rewarding program for the participants and the coordinators.

More detailed information about our available volunteer opportunities and how to apply can be found here

Make a difference in your community. Contact The Princess Shop to see how you can become involved with our organization.

Graduation season is in full swing!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   June 10, 2014 16:34

Although The Princess Shop has expanded since 2007 to offer the Fairy Godmother Program (a mentorship program) and the Next Chapter Program (a scholarship and work placement program), the touchstone of our organization has always been the Dress Program

The Princess Shop provides female students in need with an enhanced graduation experience free of charge by lending gowns and accessories donated by our community, allowing them to feel confident and proud on their graduation day. The Princess Shop believes that increasing the self-confidence of young women on this transitional day has a huge impact on their future pursuit of success. Our whole community benefits when young women are supported and celebrated.

The Dress Program is a huge success in part thanks to our amazing sponsors. Thanks to our Diamond Sponsors: Cameco, Kinsmen and SIGA. And a huge thank you to our Dress Program Graduation Services donors, who make graduation days happen! These donors include: Spa Academy, MC College, Blossoms Living, Provincial Car Service, and photography services by Wanda Keen.

If you are interested in becoming a Princess Graduate, apply to be part of our Dress Program.
