Our 10th Graduation Season a Success!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   August 15, 2017 11:30

"Thank you so much to everyone that helped me make this day truly special for me. When I first found out about the princess shop I never knew it was this amazing ! It was truly a day I will NEVER forget. I felt like a princess for sure and I got so many compliments on my make up hair and especially my gorgeous dress ! Thank you thank you thaaaaank you!" -Dacy, 2017 Princess Graduate

This June, we completed our 10th graduation season providing the Dress Program to 134 female-identified students graduating from school programs from 10 different communities across Saskatchewan.

Since the first graduation season in 2008, we have directly impacted the lives of 890 women on their graduation day! Some of these Princess Graduates have continued with our programs for mentorship (Fairy Godmother Program) and scholarships and skill development workshops (Next Chapter Program).

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our sponsors for supporting our 10th graduation season:

Diamond Sponsor Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon

Emerald Sponsor Federated Co-operatives Ltd.

Ruby Sponsor Wright Construction Western Inc.

Friends: SIGA, Centennial 360, EY

Sponsor a Princess Graduate: Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation

Since 2010, we have had 65 mentorship matches in the Fairy Godmother Program! Some of these matches that are in the program today have continued from as far back as 2010.

Through the Next Chapter Program, we have been able to award over $150,000 in scholarships and bursaries, thanks to the amazing sponsors we have had contributing to this program.

Most of our graduates are grade 12 students, however we honour requests from Grade 8s and post-secondary institutions. Our goal is to ensure that all female-identified students can attend their graduation ceremony and celebration stress-free, and then continue to pursue success in the next chapter!

It is more than a dress – everyone deserves the opportunity to recognize their accomplishments and participate fully in their graduation celebration. If you know anyone who would benefit from knowing about The Princess Shop (teacher, student or general supporter), please send them a link to our website!

How the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon Serves the Community's Greatest Needs

posted by The Princess Shop    |   January 6, 2017 16:29

The Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon's mandate is to "Serve the Community's Greatest Need.” The Princess Shop is honoured to be among the many worthy causes in the city being supported by this volunteer organization.

The Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon have been a major sponsor of the Dress Program since the 2011-2012 graduation season, as Diamond Sponsor! This commitment and support has allowed The Princess Shop to grow and flourish over the years, and this year we are celebrating our 10th graduation season supporting Saskatchewan’s graduating women in need! With last year’s 127 Princess Graduates, we anticipate another busy year ensuring graduating students in the province have an equivalent graduation experience to their peers!

As a nonprofit group, the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon puts on many initiatives throughout the year to raise funds that will go directly back into the community. It is important for the greater community to pay attention to these events, because their success is spread across so many initiatives in the community from grassroots sports to cultural events to social impact organizations like The Princess Shop!

Keep an eye out for these fundraisers put on by the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon:

Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner - Feb 3rd, 2016 (tickets on sale now, here!) - The 57th Annual Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner pays tribute to hockey legend Guy Lafleur with special guests Mario Lemieux, Luc Robitaille, and GM of the Montreal Canadiens, Marc Bergevin.

Kinsmen Home Lotto – Spring and Early Summer

Kinsmen Car Awards – July/August

Aside from fundraisers, the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon also creates accessible experiences for the community:

Special Needs Shopping Night – November every year

Special Needs Movie Matinee – Spring and Fall

Kinsmen Day at the Zoo – Late June – Enjoy free access to the Saskatoon Forestry Farm

Kinsmen Day at the Children’s Discovery MuseumMonthly free admission for all to enjoy one of Saskatoon's newest museums! The next one is on January 22!

Thank you, Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon, for your loyal support and commitment to the Saskatoon community, and especially to the Dress Program!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   June 7, 2016 09:41

The Princess Shop is now in its 9th Graduation Season in Saskatoon! What does this mean? It means we have helped over 628 young women in Saskatoon and surrounding areas to feel supported, celebrated, and beautiful on their graduation days.

If you are planning to graduate in 2016, we want to hear from you. If you are considering applying to be a Princess Graduate, here's what you need to know:

Calling All Fairy Godmothers!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   April 28, 2016 23:32

Calling all Fairy Godmothers! The Princess Shop is now accepting applications for the Fairy Godmother Program! Are you interested in making a difference in a young woman’s life? The Fairy Godmother Program was developed to create positive impact through concrete relationships between Princess Graduates who come through The Princess Shop’s dress program and established women from the community. These relationships contribute to the successful transition out of high school and to the future accomplishments of the Princess Graduates. The importance of friendship and guidance, something seemingly simple, and the positive effect this can have on a young woman is life changing. A consistent friend to encourage and believe in a Princess Graduate not only boosts her confidence but helps her to realize and achieve her dreams.

The Fairy Godmother Program runs from September – March, getting together once a month for a fun activity as a group! Fairy Godmothers meet their Princess Graduates at the annual Perfectly Pink BBQ in July, with an additional opportunity to spend time as a match and meet the rest of the wonderful ladies in the program in August before it officially starts in September.

For more information or to download the application form please click the following link:

We look forward to meeting you!

The Princess Shop Gears up for the 9th Annual Glass Slipper Benefit!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   March 16, 2016 21:51

The Princess Shop is thrilled to be putting on the 9th Annual Glass Slipper Benefit for Princesses on April 7th, 2016! The Glass Slipper benefit is such an important evening of celebrating the success of each of our Princess Graduates over the years, as well as it's our biggest fundraiser of the year! At just over 70% sold out, ticket sales are closing in - but there's still time to get yours! Get your ticket before you miss out!

As we prepared for our big night, we sat down with our lovely and talented Glass Slipper Coordinator, Brittney Witte, to ask her what she's most looking forward to on our big night! "I’m so grateful to have the chance to coordinate an event for such a giving and unique organization. The volunteers I spend time with are all so caring, and beautiful inside and out, and it will be so rewarding to see the efforts of our time come to life for one magical evening", Witte said, "The Glass Slipper is going to be an elegant and exciting occasion sponsored by many fantastic companies. It takes the support of an entire community to put together an event like this". When asked the things she's most looking forward to, Brittney gushed about the live and silent auction with over 100 packages, catered dinner and dessert by Cakes by Kait, and entertainment by Mo’ LoveLastly, she said she's most excited for our Keynote Speaker. Cara, a former Princess Graduate is a persevering, strong, young woman with an amazing story to tell. We can’t wait for her to share her journey with all of you!

As a new feature of the Glass Slipper Benefit, we are so excited to have the support of Saskatchewan's own Hillberg and Berk jewellery company! Follow our facebook page and get your tickets today to find out how you can win 1 of 10 pairs of sparkle ball earrings, a $500 Hillberg and Berk gift card, or a luxury jewellery set worth over $895!!!

For those sweet toothes in the crowd, Cakes by Kait is run by a very talented woman, Kaitlyn Bowman. Kait's baking is as sweet as she is. We can't wait to try the cupcakes that she's baking for the Glass Slipper Benefit, but for now, we'll keep the flavour a secret. :)

The Glass Slipper Benefit is just 3 WEEKS AWAY and we are over 70% sold out! Get your tickets today to be a part of Saskatoon's most magical evening. And as a bonus, you can feel great knowing that your contribution is going towards providing graduation, mentorship, and scholarship opportunities to young women right here in Saskatoon.

From Brittney, and the rest of The Princess Shop Team, we'll see you there!

Inventory!

posted by The Princess Shop    |   November 12, 2014 10:33

The majority of first-time visitors to The Princess Shop always say the same thing upon entry into our location, something along the lines of: "Wow. There are a LOT of dresses in here."

Since its inception in 2007, The Princess Shop has accepted donated graduation and formal dresses from members of the public and from dress stores. We have an inventory of over 3000 dresses (and growing everyday)! We have been so fortunate to have amassed such an incredible selection of beautiful gowns. But, there's more to it than just collecting dresses! We thought we would share a bit about how our dress donation and invetory process works.

How does The Princess Shop receive its dresses?

Dresses are donated to The Princess Shop or to our dress drop off location. We currently have one drop off location besides The Princess Shop, but we are always looking for more! If you would be interested in collecting dresses at your business on behalf of The Princess Shop, please let us know! Further details of the dress donation process are available here. But a summary is that we love and accept all dresses that the donater thinks a 2015 Princess Graduate would wear - so generally, a dress should be no more than 5 years old. We ask that the dress is in clean, wearable condition.

Once a dress comes in as a donation, members of our volunteer team enter it into inventory. Each dress is assigned a unique number and entered into our large inventory spreadsheet with description of the dress and any information provided with the donation. Once a dress is selected, the spreadsheet is updated to reflect whether the dress is out witha Princess Graduate, or has been returned to our shop.

Every fall, the entire volunteer team gets together for an afternoon and we go through each and every dress in our inventory. We ensure that all of the dresses that should be in the dress racks are accounted for, check for any mending or drycleaning needs, and take the opportunity to organize the racks. At this time, we also take the opportunity to keep our inventory up to date and remove any dresses that are damaged beyond repair, or we think might be a bit too dated for a 2015 Princess Graduate to wear to her high school graduation. This year, the inventory process took the entire team 6 hours together, plus an extra 5 hours put in by one of our awesome volunteers (thanks, Lizanne!).

What does The Princess Shop do with the dresses that have been removed from inventory?

We make an effort to keep our collection of dresses up to date and exciting for our Princess Graduates selecting their dresses. Some dresses that have become a bit dated over the years have a limited liklihood of being selected for graduation. Rather than tossing these dresses, we take the oppotunity to give them another life! We sell donated dresses at a very reasonable price at flea/thrift markets and comic-themed festivals. We have had a lot of people purchase dresses to be re-purposed in sewing projects or costumes. We like the idea that these dresses have been worn to a special occasion, donated to our organization and worn by Princess Graduates, and now can continue to be re-used in another way!

How can you get involved with the dress donation or removed inventory process?

We love to accept dress donations! It keeps our inventory fresh and interesting for each year's Princess Graduates. Please consider donating a dress that you think a 2015 graduate would wear (less than 5 years old, preferably). If you provide your contact information, we will send you a photo of a Princess Graduate in your dress when it is selected for a graduation ceremony.

Interested in picking up one of our dresses that has been recently removed from inventory? Stop by the Saskatoon Lions Club Super Duper Flea Market - this Saturday, November 15 at Prairieland Park from 9:00AM-5:00PM. We will be there in Hall D!

Thanks for your donations and support!
